چکیده

The tomato-tomahto problem (known as the synonymy problem in the database literature) arises in the context of model management when different names are used in different models for what should be identical variables, and these different models are to be integrated or combined into a larger model. When this problem occurs, it is said that the unique names assumption has been violated. We propose a method by which violations of the unique names assumption can be automatically detected. The method relies on declaring four kinds of information about modeling variables: dimensional information, laws relating dimensional expressions, information (called the quiddity) about the intended interpretation of the variables, and laws relating quiddity expressions. We present and discuss the method and the principles and theory behind it, and we describe our (prototype) implementation of the method, as an additional function of an existing model management system. file: tomato-tomahto

You Say Periklute, I Say Paraclete: Towards a Reconciliation Between the Bible and the Quran

The Quranic statement that Jesus predicted Muhammad by name is examined in light of the expectation of what the “kingdom of God” was. The concept of the kingdom of God as being the light or fire of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost is contrasted with the Sufi concept of the “Light of Muhammad.” Pentecost could be the Light of Muhammad coming upon the apostles of Christ; the Light is the same, but kn...

What do you claim when you say you have a proof?

disciple: Your proof was quite beautiful. speaker: Thank you! disciple: Actually, sometimes, I had a bit a problem following. There was quite a jump from the Fundamental Lemma to Theorem A. speaker: Well, yes, because the time was short. But I can give the details. disciple: Rigorous? speaker: Yes, of course. disciple: And Theorem B? speaker: The Fundamental Lemma also implies Theorem B; you ca...

Women’s Capabilities and Social Justice*

We come from our family’s house to live in our husband’s house. If we mention our name in this house, they say, “Oh, that is another family”. Yet when it comes to working, they say, “What you earn is ours, because you are in this family’s house”, or “because you are working on this family’s land. Let the land be registered in our names, so that we will not always feel like we are in someone els...

The renormalization group approach - from Fermi liquids to quantum dots

1 The RG: what, why and how Imagine that you have some problem in the form of a partition function Z(a, b) = dx dye −a(x 2 +y 2) e −b(x+y) 4 (1) where a, b are the parameters. First consider b = 0, the gaussian model. Suppose that you are just interested in x, say in its fluctuations. Then you have the option of integrating out y and working with the new partition function Z(a) = N dxe −ax 2 (2...
